NGAWANG SANGDROL is a prominent former political prisoner from Tibet. After peaceful demonstrations consisting solely of saying and shouting “Free Tibet!” in public, she was imprisoned at the age of 13 for 9 months and then again at the age of 15. The authorities gradually increased her sentence to 23 years, making her the longest sentenced female political prisoner in Tibet. After ongoing international pressure Ngawang was released in 2002. She had spent 11 years in prison.
In 2009 Karma Lama invited Ngawang to share her experience in song. Here she tells us her story in her own words and with her own voice, accompanied by Karma’s original music.

• “The real issue… is China’s illegal occupation of Tibet… The Chinese authorities have attempted to confuse the issue by claiming that Tibet has always been a part of China. This is untrue. Tibet was a fully independent state when the People’s Liberation Army invaded the country in 1949/50… As China’s military occupation of Tibet continues, the world should remember that though Tibetans have lost their freedom, under the international law Tibet today is still an independent state under illegal occupation.”
The Dalai Lama talking to the US Congress in 1987
